Real estate was always an option; however, it was never the plan. I bounced from job to job for years not knowing what I wanted to do. Most people don’t know this, but I loved the idea of designing homes, which is why I wanted to be an architect. Unfortunately, that dream didn’t work out… However, what finally made this the path I’ve done for seventeen years wasn’t the houses or the commissions. It was a specific feeling I didn’t see coming, and once I felt it, I never looked back.
Let me back up. Before real estate, I jumped from job to job with no real sense of what I wanted. My first dream was to be an architect, and that did not pan out. Even though I grew up around the business- my dad was in it- we were not wealthy. So I came into this career without a safety net and without a clear plan.
What changed everything was noticing who I was actually helping. I kept meeting a certain kind of client, the person who had nobody in their corner. No family member who had ever bought or sold a home, nobody to call, nobody who understood how any of it worked. I became that person for them, their main point of contact through every single step. That is when the work started to mean something, and two clients in particular show why.
The first trusted me with nearly everything. It began simply, when I helped her buy a lot. That grew into helping her buy another lot to build her own home, which meant selling her current house. In the middle of that sale, problems came up that no one could have predicted. The home needed a substantial remodel, and she was not even in the country at the time, she was traveling overseas. So I became her eyes and hands on the ground. I lined up the contractors, helped her choose the flooring, and found the right people to do the work. We finished the remodel and sold the home in better condition than when we started, all because she trusted me with something she had no one else to hand off to. That responsibility stayed with me.
The second is the moment I actually felt it. They were a family who had genuinely given up on the idea of owning a home, certain it simply was not meant for them. We sat down together, I connected them with the right lender, we found the right house, and I walked them through every step, including negotiating the inspection so they were protected. When we reached the end of that closing, it hit me. The fulfillment in this job was never the money. It is watching someone receive the keys to a home they were sure they would never have. I grew up lower middle class, so I know exactly what that dream means to a family that does not believe it is within reach. Being the person who makes it real is why I am still here seventeen years later.
That belief is why we run our business the way we do now, and why we will do what a lot of agents will not. Going the extra mile is not a slogan for us, it is a system. For every seller, we build an actual game plan to get the home maximum exposure, rather than putting a sign in the yard and hoping. Open houses are a good example. Most agents avoid them, because they consume an entire weekend and carry a lot of moving parts, so many agents simply will not put in the work. We do, and we run them strategically, marketing for days in advance and getting real traffic through the door, which is one more way we help a home actually sell. If you want a sense of how we think about a home that is not moving, I put it in this piece on what to do if your house isn’t selling. For buyers, especially first-time buyers, we sit down one-on-one for a buyer strategy session and walk through every step, because they do not know what they do not know, and then we stay with them through closing and beyond.
That is the road. Job to job, a benched architect dream, a kid from a lower-middle-class family who found the work he was meant for the first time he handed someone keys they never expected to hold. Seventeen years later, that is still the entire point.
